'We are missing a great opportunity.' The words are those of the EU commissioner on competition, Ms Neelie Kroes, in a speech February 16. She mentions five issues where she claims the picture to be 'gloomy'.
- Market Concentration (that is too high)
- Vertical foreclosure (that hinders new entrants to the market)
- Market Integration (that is too low)
- Transparency (that is too low and undermines customer confidence)
- Price formation (where there is indications of distortion)
She finishes of by referring to the commissioner for Energy who has earlier stated his discomfort with the slowness of European governments in implementation of directives that improves energy efficiency. This seems to be the “winter of discontent” in Brussels if we also add the call for action from the EU-parliamentarians. The energy sector may have to shape up!?
