The National Technical University (NTUA) is the oldest and most prestigious educational institution of Greece in the field of technology, and has contributed unceasingly to the country's scientific, technical and economic development since its foundation in 1836. NTUA is divided into nine academic Faculties, eight being for the engineering sciences, including architecture, and one for the general sciences.
The personnel of the nine faculties include more than 700 people as academic staff, 140 scientific assistants and 1000 administrative and technical staff. The total number of NTUA employees is about 2000. The total number of undergraduate students is about 15000 and the graduate students 2000.
The School of Electrical and Computer Engineering comprises many laboratories and research teams which support education and research on this engineering field in the most modern way. A lot of undergraduate and postgraduate courses are being held concerning all the sectors of Information Technologies, Telecommunications and Electric Energy.
There are more than 45 modern educational and research laboratories as well as research teams in the School (follow the respective links for a detailed description of their activities). Moreover a series of general-purpose laboratories exist which support general activities of the School, e.g. offering numerous introductory courses as well as advanced Internet services and tele-education services. More than 40 laboratorial courses are offered within the 5-year curriculum of the School in its general-purpose or specialised laboratories. The activities of the Laboratory of High Voltages include:
- Energy audits in power installations (energy saving systems, wind farms, small hydroelectric plants, photovoltaic systems, passive solar systems, cogeneration installations and biomass systems).
- Rational use of energy in medium and high voltage systems
- Quality assurance tests on high voltage components (transformers, switching devices, surge arresters, insulators, cables, grounding etc) Insulation coordination
- Electromagnetic compatibility
- Grounding systems
- Lightning protection of wind farms and of communication networks
