Strategic issues and reliability improvements for embedded generation and microgrids

This presentation deals with strategic issues related to the issues associated with the increasing trend toward the use of renewal energy, the impact of embedded generation on networks and how reliability can be improved on microgrids and network with embedded generation. The emerging trend towards installation of embedded generation of various forms has a fundamental impact on the nature of the electricity network and identifies issues that need to be addressed. Some of the key issues raised at the last CIGRE Paris Session are covered. The paper deals with recent work that has been undertaken internationally to quantify reliability improvements associated with embedded generation and microgrids.
